USE DECO DIP to REPAIR SOFT-FIRED WARE CAST IN LADY WHITE PORCELAIN SLIP
Deco Dip is great for repairing soft-fired ware cast in Lady White!
“Stretch Marks” and Pinholes
Have you ever tried to force a casting out of the mold before it was ready to release and ended up with one of those ugly “stretch mark” type cracks? And, of course all of us have been surprised at one time or another with a very large, very ugly pinhole in the middle of a doll’s face or other conspicuous spot. Don’t despair.
Repair as much as you can in the leather hard stage by smoothing the crack or pinhole with a dampened KwikClean Brush. If the spot is so deep it won’t disappear, go ahead and soft-fire the piece. Finish cleaning in the usual manner in the Dust Free Cleaning Technique. Rinse the piece, and while the piece is still wet (but not dripping) repair with Deco Dip:
1. Stir Deco Dip as directed. Load a Medium Area Brush with Deco Dip and apply the mixture into the crack or pinhole. You may need to open the pinhole a little larger with a Double Ball Stylus to allow the Deco Dip to fill it completely. Let Deco Dip start to dry. It won’t take long.
2. Use your finger or a soft, dry brush like the Small Square Shader to lightly brush away the dry Deco Dip except that which has filled in the crack or pinhole.
3. Thoroughly inspect for any loose Deco Dip particles that may have collected on the piece during the repair process. Remove these with a damp Super Doll Sponge.
4. Bisque fire to cone 6. When you take the bisque piece out of the kiln you won’t be able to see the repair without a magnifying glass!
Chips
Most of the time we throw away those pieces of greenware that get chipped or broken off during the casting/cleaning process, either in the leather hard or soft-fired stage. Now you get a second chance to save that piece.
If a piece breaks off when you are opening or removing the casting from the mold, you can repair it with a damp Kwik Clean brush and Deco Dip after soft-firing. If a soft-fired piece breaks off during your Dust-Free Cleaning, you can also repair it. Finish cleaning your piece and the broken off piece. Rinse all pieces thoroughly, and proceed with the repairs while pieces are still wet:
1. Stir Deco Dip as directed. Load a Medium Area Brush with Deco Dip and apply the mixture to the damaged area of one of the pieces.
2. Attach the other piece by pressing it firmly against the wet Deco Dip. Work quickly to do this before the Deco Dip dries. If you are not successful on the first attempt, remove the Deco Dip with a wet Medium Area Brush and start over.
3. Once the two pieces are firmly joined and the Deco Dip has started to dry use your finger or a soft, dry Small Square Shader to lightly remove any excess Deco Dip from around the repaired area.
4. Detail may be CAREFULLY re-carved with a Double Ball Stylus or Wire Loop Tool.
5. If a large piece was broken from the area such as the neck rim or head opening you can reinforce the repair by dipping a small patch of cotton cloth in Deco Dip and pressing it against the repaired area on the INSIDE of the piece.
6. Inspect piece and remove any loose Deco Dip particles with a damp Super Doll Sponge.
7. Bisque fire to cone 6.
Try it! You have nothing to lose and you may be pleasantly surprised with the results!
