Seeley’s Petite Brush Kit Instructions - KTBRP

Note:  All instructions are for Waterbase Technique™, unless otherwise specified.

PETITE MOP

This mop is designed for blending overall washes or cheeks on small dolls such as doll house dolls, all-bisque dolls or dolls in the Milette and Petite series. The natural hair bristles absorb excess paint and media during the blending process, so brush should be cleaned frequently (See “Care of Brushes” below).

When used for overall washes:

1. Apply a light coat of china paint over entire porcelain piece with a Super Doll Sponge or Multipurpose Blender/6.

2. Blend and smooth the china paint by brushing the tip of the mop back and forth across the porcelain in a polishing motion. Pounce the brush up and down in a stippling motion to blend any paint that has collected in the crevices of the bisque.

When used for blushing cheeks and other body parts:

1. Condition area to be blushed with a thin film of medium applied with the tip of a Super Doll Sponge or a Multipurpose Blender/2. The medium should be applied beyond the area of color application. This insures well-blended blush edges. If medium looks wet remove some of the excess with the dry side of a Super Doll Sponge.

2. Apply a dot of china paint in the center of the cheek or other area to be blushed with a Multipurpose Blender/2.

3. Holding the brush at the point where the ferrule is attached to the handle, pounce the bristles into the china paint. Then blend paint by pouncing all around it in ever widening circles until the color is blended as far out as you wish. Color will be concentrated in the center, where you started, and will fade light toward the outer edges of the blushed area. If your paint “traveled” too far you can remove some color by pouncing the area with the tip of a clean Super Doll Sponge.

PETITE LIP BRUSH

This brush, with its sable hair, cat’s tongue shape and pointed tip, is designed for painting lips, eyes, nose and eye dots, fingernails, and other features on small dolls.  It is also an excellent brush for painting details or designs on figurines, jewelry and other decorative porcelain pieces. Clean brush after each use or to change colors of china paint.

When used for painting facial features:

1. Load brush with paint all the way down to the ferrule by holding it at a 45° angle as you pull it through the paint on your tile.  Then pull the brush across the tile until the paint looks translucent. A fully-loaded brush will maintain its pointed shape as you paint.

2. Use a light pressure on the tip of the brush to apply paint in very small areas like nostrils.  Lay the brush down with a little more pressure to release paint in larger areas.

3. Smooth paint by rubbing the tip of the brush lightly over the painted area. Reload brush with paint if the hairs start separating.

When used for painting decorative details such as flowers and leaves:

1. Load brush as in step 1 above.

2. Use flowing brushstrokes to paint designs, controlling the width of the stroke by the amount of pressure applied to the brush as the stroke is being made. For example, if painting a leaf shape start the brush stroke with light pressure on the tip of the brush.  This will make the pointed tip of a leaf.  As you continue with the stroke, lay the brush down to release more paint to widen the shape of the leaf. At the end of the stroke lighten pressure on the brush so that the tip of the leaf is painted with tip of the brush.

3. The Petite Lip Brush is also excellent for painting decorative details on porcelain using Liquid Bright Gold.  If cleaned thoroughly after each use with Brush Cleaner (not water) and stored properly the brush will continue to maintain its shape after repeated use.  It is important that any brushes used for painting Liquid Bright Gold be dedicated for this use only and not mixed with brushes used for china painting.

PETITE SHADER

This tiny sable square shader is used for blending paint on the lips, eyelids, nostrils and other facial areas of small dolls and the painted eyes, eyebrows, lips and other areas of larger dolls.  It can also be used for applying paint to small areas of decorative pieces such as jewelry or figurines or as a clean up brush to remove painting mistakes before china firing.  Clean brush after each use. If you are blending painted areas of different colors on the same doll or decorative piece it is best to have more than one brush available so that you do not have to wait for the brush to dry between cleanings.

When used for blending paint:

1. Apply paint to porcelain in the desired shape with an appropriate detail brush. Stroke the dry Petite Shader over the painted area in light, sweeping motions to smooth the surface of the paint, staying within the painted shape.  It is best to pull the brush from the outer edges toward the middle of the painted area. The harder you stroke the painted surface the more the brush will absorb and remove the paint.

In blushed areas such as eyelids, where the edge of the color should gently fade outwards, pull brush toward the paint from outside the edges of it.  As you pull the brush into the paint some of it will be absorbed into the bristles.  When you start the next stroke a little further out a bit of paint will be applied.  Keep stroking in this manner until the blushing is extended out as far as you want.

2. If needed, remove any excess paint from the brush by occasionally blotting it gently on a Lint-free Towel. Do not rub brush on towel or this could cause damage to your brush.

When used for applying paint:

1. Load brush by pulling it through the puddle of paint in your tile.  Pull the brush across the tile until the paint looks translucent.

2. Lightly brush paint onto the porcelain and spread it over the area you wish to be covered. Reload brush as needed to keep the paint density as uniform as possible. If paint mixture is too thick it will not spread easily.  If it is too thin the color may be too light.

3. Once the painted area is completely filled in rub the brush lightly over the surface of the paint to remove any streaks or uneven areas.

When used for removing painting mistakes:

1. Dip the brush into water.

2. Use your finger to press the brush down onto a Lint-free Towel. This will flatten the brush and remove the excess water. Do not rub the brush over the towel, as this could cause damage to your brush.

3. Use damp brush to remove small painting mistakes such as errant individual eyelash or eyebrow strokes or smudges around the lips or other areas.  When removing an eyelash turn the brush to the side and pull it toward the eye opening.

4. Clean the brush frequently to eliminate smudging.

CARE OF BRUSHES:

Petite Mop:  Add a few drops of mild dish detergent to a glass of water. Swish brush vigorously through the soapy water.  Rinse under the tap.  Brush must be completely dry before reusing.

Petite Lip Brush and Petite Shader:  Swish brush through glass of water and blot it gently on a Lint-free Towel.  Repeat until no paint residue is visible after blotting.

All brushes should be air dried and stored in upright container, Brush Traveler or Brush Caddy.
