PATCHING Pour holes - 2 methods

A number of small. all-bisque dolls require patching of the pour hole in the torso or arms and legs, either completely or partially.
METHOD 1:
1. As soon as the piece to be patched is removed from the mold start making the patch. Do not let the greenware piece dry out.
2. Pour a small puddle of slip, slightly larger than the area to be patched, onto the outside of a mold. The plaster of the mold will start absorbing moisture from the puddle of slip.  Let the puddle of slip dry out enough to be picked up with a pallette knife. It is important that both the piece to be patched and the patch are equally moist. If either is much drier than the other the patch will not adhere or fire properly.
3. Use a damp KwikClean Brush #91 to apply a small amount of wet slip around the pour hole to be patched.  Note: If greenware is cast in Seeley's Lady White slip, Deco Dip works great for this step.
4. Pick up the patch with a palette knife and place it over the pour hole. The wet slip will hold the patch in place.
5. Use a clean, damp KwikClean Brush #91 or a moist Super Doll Sponge to smooth the patched area.
6. Pre-clean and soft-fire in usual manner.
METHOD 2:
Fast and easy patching
by Bob Severns
-- If you are making a doll or figurine that has the pour hole in the foot, here is an easy way to patch the foot closed.
-- Cast piece as usual.
-- When piece is leatherhard trim off the spare.
-- Then, pour a little slip back into the piece, only as much as you need in proportion to the hole.
-- Quickly turn the piece over so that this extra slip runs down back to the pour hole area.
-- Place piece on a plaster mold so that the slip set up as a “patch” in the pour hole.
-- When it is ready to open, you now have a “patched” piece where the pour hole was.
If you don’t want to pour any extra slip into the cavity again, you can always cast a small puddle of slip onto a mold, let it set up until rubbery. Then place onto pour hole, turn mold over and let dry until you are ready to open the piece
