Mixing/Conditioning Porcelain Slip
Mixing your porcelain before casting may seem like a simple thing, but it is an important step to beautiful pieces. A few tips for you below.
Material List:
Gallon of slip
Empty, clean slip container
Strainer
Stir stick, wooden dowel, painter’s stick or electric mixer.
Seeley Slip Thinner (optional)
Open jar of slip.
Stir with stir stick until a creamy consistency.
You can also use an electric mixer (drill with a mixing spade on end, slip whiz or other device).
If it is too thick, add a few drops of Slip Thinner and mix.
Pour slip through a strainer into the empty container. This will remove any small dried up particles which tend to form along the lid during transportation and storage (and if you have cast out of that jug previously).
Clean out the original slip jar to get rid of any contaminants.
Pour slip back into jug.
Allow time for air bubbles to escape. You can wait for 15 minutes up to a few hours. If you use an electric mixer, allow extra time for bubbles to dissipate
