GALAXY GLAZE, HOW - TO
Application for Overall Coverage or Detail Decoration on Stoneware and Porcelain
Seeley’s new high-fire Galaxy Glazes can be applied to dry or slightly-dampened greenware, cone 018-016 soft-fired ware, or cone 06 soft bisque ware. They work equally well on stoneware and porcelain.
Seeley’s Galaxy Glazes are lead-free and apply easily with a glaze brush. Make sure that your piece is cleaned and dry. Remember when glazing porous ware for a cone 6 range firing, the less firing the ware has received, the more porous it will be. The difference in the ware’s porosity needs to be kept in mind when you are applying the glaze for the cone 6 firing. The much more porous bone-dry greenware and cone 018 soft-fired ware will take up the glaze at a much faster rate than ware which as been fired to cone 06.
In order not to accidentally apply too much glaze to the piece, the application thickness of the glaze needs to be closely observed.
For overall coverage, using a Soft Fan Brush (SBR65), brush on 2-4 coats, applying paint generously, or dip one or two times. In general, an application of ˝ to1 credit card in thickness for a thin to medium application is a good place to start. It is always nice to have a few small test cups or other small items on hand which can be used to gauge glaze application thickness before applying the glaze to your favorite piece.
For detail decoration, Seeley’s Galaxy Glazes are versatile as they can be used for beautiful detail work. Using a Round Brush (SBR62 or SBR63) or a Shader Brush (SBR60 and SBR61), paint the motif you desire. The results are lovely. Your piece will have a translucent water color effect at one or two coats and an opaque effect at three or four coats, depending on the look you desire.
Be sure to dry foot your piece and let it dry thoroughly before firing. Seeley’s Galaxy Glazes have a satin finish after firing.
